GAMSAT biology questions

Biology is the largest single block of questions in the GAMSAT — and the one candidates most often prepare for in the wrong way, by memorising content that the exam does not ask them to recall.

The mistake worth avoiding first

Biology is 40% of Section 3, roughly 30 of 75 questions. That volume tempts people into content revision — but GAMSAT biology questions supply the biology. What they test is whether you can read an unfamiliar pathway, graph or experiment and reason from it under time pressure.

Memorising a textbook is close to the least efficient preparation available. Practising on material you have never seen is close to the most.

What ACER assumes you already know

ACER states the assumed level plainly: the first year of university studies in biology and chemistry, and A-level/Leaving Certificate/Year 12 in physics. For biology that means first-year university — not a major, and not honours-level depth.

In practice the recurring territory is cell biology, biochemistry and metabolism, genetics and inheritance, physiology and homeostasis, and enough experimental design to read a controlled study. But the operative word is assumed: anything beyond that level will be given to you in the stimulus. If a question needs an enzyme constant, a pathway diagram or a set of results, they appear in the question’s own material.

There is no official syllabus — ACER publishes none. Ours is reverse-engineered and labelled as such on the syllabus page.

This is why biology scores respond so poorly to content cramming and so well to timed practice: the bottleneck is almost never the biology, it is the reading and the clock. A real Section 3 gives you 2.0 minutes a question including the time spent reading the stimulus.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the GAMSAT is biology?

Biology is 40% of Section 3 — about 30 of its 75 questions. Since Section 3 is weighted double in ACER’s overall score, biology alone is roughly a fifth of your weighted result.

What level of biology do I need?

ACER assumes the first year of university studies in biology and chemistry, and A-level/Leaving Certificate/Year 12 in physics. Anything above that level is supplied in the question’s stimulus, so depth of recall matters far less than speed of comprehension.

Can I sit these questions untimed?

The set runs against a clock, because untimed biology practice tests a skill the exam does not assess. You can submit at any point and every item comes back with a worked explanation.

Are these real GAMSAT questions?

No, and nobody may lawfully publish those. Every item here is written from scratch to ACER’s published style and skills list. See past papers for why the PDFs circulating online are a problem.
