The short version

You read unfamiliar material — prose, poetry, cartoons, tables, graphs — and answer multiple-choice questions about what it means. Every answer is derivable from the material in front of you. Nothing you already know about the topic helps, and assuming otherwise is the most common way candidates lose marks here. It carries a quarter of your overall score — the same share as Section 2, half what Section 3 carries — and the arithmetic behind that split is set out in our guide to all three GAMSAT sections.

ACER describes Section 1 as testing skills in the interpretation and understanding of ideas in social and cultural contexts. The stimulus material covers a range of academic and public issues, with an emphasis on socio-cultural, personal and interpersonal topics. Questions ask for the most appropriate answer, not the only correct one, so more than one option can be partly defensible.

Note how the third is defined: critical thinking happens inside plausible reasoning, not alongside it. The hardest items are therefore judgement calls made over already-demanding material, which is why two options can both look right. When that happens, the answer is usually the one with the least rhetorical colouring — the observation rather than the dramatic claim.

What the stimulus material looks like

ACER names four written registers plus visual and tabular forms. Everything more specific comes from preparation providers and candidate reports.

Two under-discussed formats are worth knowing about because they behave differently from everything else. The first is a rules unit: a diagram plus text that defines terms and sets out how to interpret them, followed by questions applying those rules. The second is a multi-comment opinion unit, where a question is followed by numbered comments from different people that you have to integrate.

Visual units are not easy units. A cartoon can be as demanding as a poem, and diagram questions frequently present simple information in a deliberately complicated way — looping flowcharts, graphs with more axes than the data needs. That difficulty is designed in.

The skills actually being tested

  • Inference — selecting what must be true given the material, without importing anything from outside it.
  • Tone and attitude— the writer’s stance and register, including in cartoons and images, and distinguishing a poet’s view from the view of the person the poem is about.
  • Argument analysis — separating premises from conclusions, and identifying the unstated assumption bridging the two.
  • Comparison across texts — holding the overall meaning of two pieces at once and relating them, most often two poems or two cartoons.
  • Interpretation of visual material — graphs, tables and diagrams read for relationships rather than values. No calculations are required anywhere in Section 1.

The best one-line description of the difficulty comes from a preparation provider and is worth borrowing: Section 1 sets subjective thinking requirements against objective answer criteria. You are asked to interpret, and then marked as though there is one defensible reading — because there is.

How the questions are grouped

Questions are not independent. They attach to shared stimulus units — one piece of material with a set of questions hanging off it. Reported unit sizes run from 1 to 7 questions, most commonly 25, averaging about 4. ACER uses the word “units” itself, so this structure is official even though the counts are provider-observed.

Short visual and quotation units tend to carry the fewest questions; long prose and multi-comment units carry the most. That is what makes triage possible: a dense passage attached to two questions is poor value per minute, and a shorter one attached to five is good value.

Timing, and a number we will not give you

100 minutes across 62 questions is about 97 seconds each, including the time spent reading the stimulus. That is arithmetic, not an instruction — nobody expects you to spend the same time on a one-line quotation and a 600-word passage.

On reading time

ACER no longer publishes a reading-time breakdown. Earlier booklets (2020–2022) itemised it; the 2026 edition does not.

Several sites currently ranking for this section publish an itemised reading period beside the current question count. We do not, because ACER does not. Build your pacing plan on the 100-minute total.

The dominant approach candidates report is multi-pass: clear everything you are confident about first, leave the rest, and come back. Reaching the last question with time to return beats reaching question 50 having perfected the first ten. There is no negative marking, so every question should have an answer selected before the clock runs out, even if it is a guess.

Where candidates lose marks

  • Over-reading. Interpreting to a depth the question does not ask for. Poetry is where this does the most damage.
  • Importing outside knowledge. Every answer is available in the material. An option can be factually true and still wrong.
  • Confusing the author with a view the author reports. Writers quote positions in order to attack them.
  • Missing the qualifier. Long stems ending in except, least or not catch people who have stopped reading carefully by question 40.
  • Rejecting the straightforward answer because it seems too obvious to be the point of the question.
  • Science-background complacency. This is the section science graduates most often assume needs no preparation, and the one they most often report as harder than expected.

Check the format on any site you use

Three formats are in circulation. Only one is current.

Section 1 has changed twice since 2020: 75 questions on paper, then 47 questions online, and now 62 questions in 100 minutes. Pages publishing the older figures are still ranking, including two well-known preparation sites. If a resource states 47 or 75 questions for Section 1, its other facts are the same age.

What is section 1 of the GAMSAT?

Section 1 is Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences: 62 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes, sat at a test centre in the same sitting as Section 3. You are given unfamiliar material — prose, poetry, cartoons, graphs, tables — and asked to interpret it. It contributes 25% of your overall score.

How does GAMSAT Section 1 work?

Questions come in shared stimulus units: one piece of material with roughly 2 to 5 questions attached to it, though units of one and of up to 7 are reported. Each question has four options and asks for the most appropriate answer. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so leave nothing blank.

Is GAMSAT section 1 hard?

It is the section most often reported as harder than expected, which is different from being the hardest. There is no syllabus, so preparation feels unproductive and gets postponed — and candidates from science backgrounds tend to assume reading comprehension needs no practice. The difficulty is real but specific: interpretation is being marked against a single defensible answer, under a clock that gives you about 97 seconds a question including reading time.

Which section of the GAMSAT is the hardest?

ACER publishes no difficulty data. What can be said accurately:

  • Section 3 carries the most content and counts double in the overall score.
  • Section 1 is the one most often reported as harder than candidates expected.
  • Section 2 is the least prepared for rather than the hardest — and the quickest to improve.
Do I need to know anything about the topics in Section 1?

No. Every answer is derivable from the material in front of you, and outside knowledge is a liability rather than an advantage — the most common wrong option is one that is factually true but unsupported by the passage. What helps is practice at reading unfamiliar registers quickly, not background in the subjects sampled.
