GAMSAT by country
GAMSAT in the United Kingdom
The UK has the most GAMSAT courses of any country and the shakiest position for the test itself. Before you commit two years to this route, it is worth knowing how few UK courses genuinely require GAMSAT — and how few of them will still accept a score you sat three years ago.
- £296registration fee (2026)
- 2 yearsscore validity (Ulster: 4)
- 15institutions using GAMSAT
- 15 OctUCAS deadline
Read this before you register
The University of Nottingham has dropped GAMSAT for 2027 entry and moved to UCAT. UCAT is now an accepted alternative at eight of the 15 remaining institutions, and Keele and Sunderland require UCAT regardless of your GAMSAT score. Genuinely GAMSAT-only UK routes are already a minority. Detail is in the direction of travel below.
The exam does not change by country
There is one GAMSAT. Sections, timing and syllabus are identical in every market — what changes is the fee, the validity window and what each university does with the score. For the test itself, use the free timed practice test.
What is different about applying in the UK
Five things, each of which catches people out.
- Everything runs through UCAS, deadline 15 October, and several schools stack a second deadline on top of it.
- Scores last 2 years, not four — with one named exception, Ulster, at four.
- Two schools admit non-graduates through GAMSAT. Almost nobody covers this, and it materially widens who can apply.
- Per-section minimums are a British rule. They apply at several UK schools and at none in Ireland.
- International access is the exception, not the rule. Six institutions are confirmed open to international applicants; six are confirmed closed.
Non-graduates can use GAMSAT at Exeter and Plymouth
The test is named for graduate entry. In two places, that name is misleading.
Plymouth states it outright on both its medicine and its dentistry pages: “although the GAMSAT is called a graduate admissions test, you do not need to be a graduate to sit the GAMSAT or apply with this qualification”. Prior degrees are not considered at all for those courses — GAMSAT is the only academic qualification that affects shortlisting.
Exeter goes further and reverses the logic. GAMSAT is compulsory for anyone who will be more than two full academic years past their A levels at the point of entry, degree or no degree. For that group GAMSAT replaces the UCAT rather than supplementing it.
Liverpool keeps a narrow professional-registration exception — certain paramedics with a pre-2021 Certificate of HE, operating department practitioners qualified pre-2018, and nurses registered pre-2000. Every other UK institution in our dataset requires a completed degree. Sunderland is ambiguous on its own pages and we have marked it unverified rather than guessing.
Two years — unless you are applying to Ulster
ACER publishes a blanket rule. One university's own page contradicts it, and its page governs.
ACER states results are valid for two consecutive years in the UK and Ireland, then adds a single named exception: Ulster University has a four year results validity. Ulster’s own page lists eight accepted sittings for August 2027 entry, running back to March 2023.
Note also that Statements of Results stay in your ACER portal for four years in every country. Retention is not validity, and conflating the two is the likeliest source of the two-versus-four-year confusion in circulation.
Deadlines that are not the UCAS deadline
Missing one of these is a silent rejection.

| Liverpool | Online Form B by 23 October 2026, 08:30 BST — separate from UCAS |
| Sunderland | Interview selection tool by 22 October 2026, 18:00 GMT |
| ScotGEM | Compulsory supplementary online questionnaire, typically early November |
| Swansea | UCAS closes 18:00 BST on 15 October; no late or direct applications |
| Plymouth | UCAS closes 18:00 on 15 October for both medicine and dentistry |
| Ulster | May accept applications after 15 October from candidates registered for the March 2027 sitting |
| All applicants | Tick "UK" and add your UCAS Personal ID in your ACER account by midnight GMT 31 October |

Published figures, and what kind of number each one is
Comparing UK 'cutoffs' without labelling them is the single biggest accuracy trap on this topic.
The numbers below are not the same kind of number. City St George’s 56for the 2026 cycle is a real ranked cutoff. Ulster’s 59 is an average of interviewees pooled across 2020–2025 — roughly half of those interviewed scored below it. Keele’s and Sunderland’s are fixed published minimums that never move. Set side by side without labels, they would imply Ulster is the hardest of the three. It is not.
| Institution | Figure | What kind of number | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| City St George's | 56 | Actual cutoff | 2026 cycle |
| City St George's | 54 | Actual cutoff | 2025 cycle |
| City St George's | 56 | Actual cutoff | 2024 cycle |
| ScotGEM | 50 | Actual cutoff Unweighted. No section below 42. | 2025 entry |
| Keele — With Section 3 ≥58 | 55 | Minimum to apply | 2026/2027 entry |
| Keele — With Section 3 ≥55 | 58 | Minimum to apply | 2026/2027 entry |
| Pears Cumbria — Home | 59 | Actual cutoff | 2026 entry |
| Pears Cumbria — Contextual | 53 | Actual cutoff | 2026 entry |
| Plymouth (Medicine) | 52 | Actual cutoff Sections: S1 43, S2 43, S3 48 | 2024 entry |
| Plymouth (Dentistry) | 53 | Actual cutoff Sections: S1 46, S2 45, S3 56 | 2025 entry |
| Swansea — Home | 53 | Actual cutoff | Sept 2024 entry |
| Swansea — Welsh-domiciled | 50 | Actual cutoff | Sept 2024 entry |
| Swansea — International | 50 | Actual cutoff | Sept 2024 entry |
| Ulster | 59 | Average of interviewees ⚠️ This is an AVERAGE OF INTERVIEWEES, not a cutoff. Showing it beside a real cutoff would wrongly imply Ulster is harder than City St George's. | pooled 2020–2025 |
| Sunderland — With Section 3 ≥58 | 55 | Minimum to apply | 2026 entry |
| Sunderland — With Section 3 ≥55 | 58 | Minimum to apply | 2026 entry |
| Worcester | 50 | Minimum to apply ⚠️ "Most shortlisted applicants scored more than 50" — undated and not year-stamped | undated |
ScotGEM's 50 is not comparable with anyone else's 50
ScotGEM is the only institution outside Australia confirmed to use the unweightedscore — a plain mean of the three sections, rather than ACER’s overall in which Section 3 counts double. Its 2025-entry figure of 50 overall, with no subset below 42, describes a different candidate from a weighted 50. Our score calculator shows both figures.
Per-section minimums — a British rule
This is where the '50 in each section' rule actually comes from.
| Institution | Section floor | Overall floor | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| City St George's | 50 | None stated | Every section |
| ScotGEM | 42 | 50 | No subset below 42 (unweighted) |
| Keele | 50 | 55 | Every section |
| Liverpool | 50 | 50 | Every section |
| Swansea | 50 | 50 | Section 3 only |
| Ulster | 50 | None stated | Every section |
| Sunderland | 50 | 55 | Every section |
The practical consequence: in the UK a lopsided section profile can be fatal even with a strong overall. In Ireland it is not disqualifying at all.
The direction of travel
An honest read of the evidence, which is not favourable to GAMSAT in the UK.
- Nottingham is switching to UCAT for 2027 entry.Confirmed on Nottingham’s own page, which splits its guidance into 2026 entry (GAMSAT) and 2027 entry (“the UCAT aptitude test (not GAMSAT)”). It was a significant destination — a four-year graduate-entry course that accepted a 2:2 and international applicants.
- No new UK adopter was found for 2027 entry or later.
- UCAT is an accepted alternative at eight of the 15 — Brunel, Chester, Liverpool (for non-graduates), Pears Cumbria, Surrey (for bioscience degrees), Swansea, UEA (for biomedical degrees) and Worcester. At each of those, a candidate can avoid GAMSAT entirely.
- Two require UCAT regardless. Keele requires both tests; Sunderland is UCAT-primary and uses GAMSAT only to compensate for missing A levels or science GCSEs.
- Genuinely GAMSAT-only routes are a minority— on this evidence, City St George’s, Ulster, ScotGEM, Liverpool’s A101 for graduates, Plymouth medicine and dentistry via the non-A-level route, and Exeter for anyone more than two years past A levels.
Caveat, stated plainly:no ACER, UCAT consortium or Medical Schools Council statement on GAMSAT’s UK status exists. The five points above are an inference from institution-level admissions pages, not a sourced sector-wide claim. They should be read as such.
Sitting the test in the UK
The registration fee is £296; late registration adds £71. Test centres for the 2026 sittings covered Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derry/Londonderry, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Norwich, Plymouth and Sheffield — the list differs between March and September, and ACER may add or cancel venues after registrations open.
Written Communication is sat remotely roughly three weeks before the test-centre day, which applies in every country. See remote proctoring for the mechanics.
Common questions
How long is a GAMSAT score valid in the UK?
Two years, per ACER. Ulster is the single named exception at four years and accepts sittings back to March 2023 for August 2027 entry. Where ACER’s blanket rule and a university’s own page disagree, the university’s page governs for that university.
Can I apply to a UK medical school with GAMSAT if I do not have a degree?
At Plymouth, yes, explicitly, for both medicine and dentistry. At Exeter, GAMSAT is compulsory rather than optional if you will be more than two full academic years past your A levels. Liverpool has narrow professional-registration exceptions. Everywhere else in our dataset requires a completed degree.
Is a score of 50 in every section required in the UK?
At some institutions, not all. Our dataset records a section floor at City St George’s, Keele, Liverpool, ScotGEM (42, unweighted), Sunderland, Swansea (Section 3 only) and Ulster. The rest state no section rule. It is not an Irish rule at all.
Should I sit UCAT instead?
That depends entirely on your target list. Eight UK institutions accept UCAT as an alternative, two require it regardless, and a minority of routes are GAMSAT-only. If your list is mostly Australian or Irish, GAMSAT is not optional — neither country accepts UCAT.
Are international applicants accepted?
Confirmed open: Chester, Keele, Swansea, Ulster, Worcester and Liverpool’s A100. Confirmed closed: Pears Cumbria, City St George’s, UEA, ScotGEM, Sunderland and Liverpool’s A101. Plymouth admits international students but routes them through UCAT. Surrey and Exeter are unresolved — see our international applicants page.
