University of Sydney: GAMSAT requirements
Sydney ranks on section scores with no overall at all, and states flatly that previous thresholds “will not be published or provided”.
- —No overall minimum published
- 50Minimum in each section
- 5.00Minimum GPA to apply
- NoneNo overall score used at all
Every figure on this page is a number to compare yourself against, which is difficult to do without a score of your own. Our GAMSAT practice test is free, timed and marked section by section, so you can find out where you currently stand against Sydney’s requirements before you spend a cycle applying to it.
What is distinctive about Sydney
Sydney is the hardest institution here to plan around, deliberately so. It ranks MD and DMD applicants on section scores — no overall, no average — and it does not publish how those sections are combined. We do not infer a formula. Anyone quoting one is guessing.
It also refuses to publish thresholds, in language that leaves no room: “Threshold GAMSAT scores from previous years are irrelevant to the current admission cycle and will not be published or provided.” Any site showing you a Sydney cutoff has invented it.
The Master of Pharmacy is the exception to all of this and does use an overall score, at 55.
GPA works as a hurdle and a second-order tiebreaker only: 5.0, or 4.5 through Rural Facilitated Entry, where the section-50 rule still applies. Standard metro MD applicants are not interviewed at all. Applications go direct to Sydney, not through GEMSAS, and from 2027 entry Indigenous Facilitated Entry waives the GAMSAT entirely.

At University of Sydney, the GAMSAT is used for 3 courses.

How to apply: Direct to Sydney (NOT GEMSAS).
How Sydney scores the GAMSAT
This institution does NOT use ACER's published overall score.
| Scoring method | Formula used | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Section scores only — no overall is used | No overall score is used | Applicants are ranked on their section scores. No overall score and no average enters the calculation. |
Sydney on its own method
MD and DMD use no overall and no average score, ranking on section scores. The combination formula is deliberately unpublished — we do not infer one. Master of Pharmacy is the exception and does use an overall of 55.
Sydney does not publish how the GAMSAT is weighted against the rest of the application. Not published is the honest answer; we do not estimate it.
Every figure this institution publishes
Sydney publishes no threshold figure
There is no cutoff, median or interviewee average to report here — not because we could not find one, but because University of Sydney does not publish one.
Any site showing you a specific Sydney cutoff has estimated it. Where minimums exist they are listed below, and a minimum is a floor to be eligible, not a competitive bar.

Pathways where the GAMSAT is waived entirely
Sydney admits through a pathway that require no GAMSAT score at all.
- Indigenous Facilitated Entry — GAMSAT waived entirely from 2027 entry
Eligibility for these pathways is decided by Sydney, not by a score, and the criteria are specific. If you may qualify, contact the university directly — this is the least-documented part of GAMSAT admissions anywhere, and it is not something to rule yourself out of on the basis of a summary.
Sub-quotas and adjustments
Places are not one undifferentiated pool. These quotas change which list you are ranked in.
- Rural Facilitated Entry: GPA 4.5, section 50 still applies
- Dubbo stream
What else you should know
Sydney refuses to publish thresholds: "Threshold GAMSAT scores from previous years are irrelevant to the current admission cycle and will not be published or provided." Standard metro MD has no interview.
Common questions about Sydney
Does Sydney publish a GAMSAT cutoff?
No. University of Sydney publishes no cutoff, median or interviewee average at all. Anyone quoting a specific figure for Sydney has estimated it.
What GAMSAT score do you need to apply to Sydney?
No minimum overall score is published, and at least 50 in each section. A GPA of 5.00 is also required. These are eligibility floors. Meeting them does not make you competitive.
Does Sydney use the weighted or unweighted GAMSAT score?
Section scores only — no overall is used. Applicants are ranked on their section scores. No overall score and no average enters the calculation.
Can you get into Sydney without sitting the GAMSAT?
Through one pathway, yes: Indigenous Facilitated Entry — GAMSAT waived entirely from 2027 entry. Eligibility is set by the university, not by a score.
