How long do you need to study for the GAMSAT?
Four to six months is the window that suits most candidates. But the calendar is the second question — the first is where you are starting from, and almost nobody asks it in that order.
The short version
Plan for four to six months if you are starting from a standing start, and eight to twelve weeksif you have recent, working science knowledge and just need to learn the exam. Two months from scratch is possible — people have done it — but it is a compressed plan with no recovery room, not a normal one.
ACER does not publish a recommended number of months. What it does say is that there is “little benefit to be gained from last-minute ‘cramming’”. The four-to-six-month window on this page is our recommendation, not ACER’s.

Why nobody will give you a straight number
Because the honest answer is a distribution, and the distribution is genuinely wide.
The most quoted line in this community comes from a moderator on the largest Australian medical students’ forum, and it is worth reading before you plan anything:
“Some people sit the exam blind and score in the top percentile, others prepare for 6 months full time and don’t pass. It’s probably hard to tell where on the spectrum you lie until you’ve actually sat the exam.”
That is not evasion. GAMSAT is a reasoning test with a knowledge floor, and reasoning ability moves slowly with study time while knowledge moves quickly. Two candidates with identical timetables can land twenty points apart because they started in different places.
Here is the spread as candidates themselves report it. These are self-reported outcomes from public posts — none of them are verified, and the ones people write up are disproportionately the ones that went well. Read it as a range, not as evidence of what works.

The last row of that table is the one that gets least attention and matters most. Improvement between sittings is real but modest for most people. Treat your first sitting as a real attempt, not a reconnaissance run.
Your starting point sets the timeline
Work out which row you are in before you pick a number of months.

ACER’s assumed level is the first year of university studies in biology and chemistry, and A-level/Leaving Certificate/Year 12 in physics. If you can look at that sentence and know roughly where you stand against it, you are in the top two rows. If you cannot, you are in the bottom two, and the extra months are not padding.
What four to six months looks like
Phases, not a day-by-day timetable. A rigid schedule survives about ten days of real life.

Week 0 is the phase people skip, and it is the cheapest week in the plan. Sitting something timed before you have studied anything is what tells you which of the five starting points above is actually yours — but only if the material behaves like the real thing, because a diagnostic built on unrepresentative items measures the wrong weakness. Two pieces of tactical advice recur constantly among candidates who improved, and both are about how you use material rather than how much you do:
- Ration the official material. There is a fixed, small quantity of it. Burning through every ACER question in month one leaves you with nothing to run a realistic mock against in month five.
- Depth over volume on review. The most-endorsed study behaviour is spending many hours on a single completed paper, marking in each stimulus exactly where the answer came from and what the fastest route to it was. Doing three papers badly is worth less than doing one properly.
About an hour a day, consistently, is the routine that comes up most often. Long weekend blocks are worth less than they feel like they should be, because the skill being built is pattern recognition under time pressure, and that consolidates with frequency rather than duration.
Can you study for the GAMSAT in 2 months?
Yes, with conditions attached. One of the most-upvoted write-ups in this community is an eight-week preparation from a non-science background that produced a 72. It happens. But look at what a two-month plan actually requires:
- Real hours, not aspirational ones. Two months at an hour a day is about sixty hours. That is enough to learn the exam if your science is current. It is not enough to build first-year chemistry from nothing.
- No recovery room.A bad fortnight — illness, work, anything — consumes a quarter of the plan. Four-month timelines absorb that; two-month ones do not.
- Diagnose in week one, not week six. With eight weeks you cannot afford to discover your real weakness late. Sit something timed on day one.
- Skip breadth-first if you are non-science. In two months, go where the marks are: chemistry is 40% of Section 3, biology another 40%, and Section 3 is double-weighted in the overall score.
The honest framing: two months is a viable plan for a specificcandidate, and a gamble for a general one. If the choice is between sitting in two months and sitting six months later, and you have no science background, the later sitting is usually the better investment — not least because a registration fee is charged in full every time.
If you have less than two months
Stop trying to cover the syllabus and spend the time on format and pacing instead. Sit full timed sections, learn what 75 questions in 150 minutes actually feels like, get fluent at skipping and returning, and drill mental arithmetic. Never leave a question blank — there is no negative marking, and all questions carry the same value. You will not build a science foundation in four weeks, but you can stop losing marks to the clock.
If you have no science background
The largest underserved group in this market, and the one asking the most specific questions.
ACER’s own position is encouraging and blunt at the same time. Candidates whose first degree is non-scientific “can still sit GAMSAT and succeed in an application”, but “it must be stressed that success in GAMSAT is unlikely without knowledge and ability in the biological and physical sciences”. And specifically for you: “for non-science graduates some specific preparation covering relevant basic sciences to first year university level is highly recommended”.
That is the clearest instruction ACER gives anyone about preparation, and it is aimed squarely at this group. Five practical points:
- The question is “how deep”, and the answer is “not very”. Get a broad working floor across the whole topic map, then stop. Depth past that point has sharply diminishing returns, and the exam is designed to hand you anything genuinely obscure inside the question.
- Chemistry first, and give it the most time. It is the biggest slice of Section 3 and the one that takes longest to build. Organic chemistry in particular rewards early, slow exposure.
- Maths fluency is the real bottleneck, not maths knowledge.Log rules, scientific notation, index laws, ratios, percentage change — fast and by hand. Candidates report this costs them more marks than any biology gap.
- Section 1 and Section 2 are your advantage. They are half the overall score before weighting, and a humanities background is a genuine head start on both. Do not spend every hour on science and arrive with an untrained Section 2.
- Your degree does not disqualify you. There is no eligibility distinction by discipline, and the highest-profile write-ups in this community are routinely from non-science candidates.

Start by measuring, not by planning
Every timeline on this page assumes you know where you are starting. Most people do not, and guess wrong in both directions — science graduates underestimate how much the timing hurts, and non-science candidates overestimate how much content they are missing.

Then check which sitting you are actually planning towards. As at July 2026, September 2026 registrations have closed and March 2027 has no published test dates, so most people reading this are working towards a sitting whose date is not yet known. That is a reason to start now, not a reason to wait.

Can you study for GAMSAT in 2 months?

If you have no science background and a later sitting is available, the later sitting is usually the better decision.
How many hours a day should I study for the GAMSAT?
About an hour a day, consistently, is the most commonly reported routine among candidates who scored well — including several who prepared while working full time. Frequency beats duration here, because what you are training is pattern recognition under time pressure. Long weekend blocks feel productive and consolidate poorly.
Do I need a prep course to do well in the GAMSAT?
ACER’s published answer to which providers it recommends is one word: “None.” It describes preparation courses as unregulated and not associated with ACER or the graduate-entry schools, and warns that exposure to real test questions at a coaching course can get your scores withheld. Plenty of candidates score well without one. Spend on individual feedback before you spend on a course.

How much can I improve if I sit the GAMSAT again?
Less than most people expect. Repeat candidates in this community routinely report small movements, and one candidate reports scoring within a single point of their own result after six months of preparation versus none. A resit is worth doing when you can name what went wrong and change it — not simply because you have more time available.
One thing worth keeping in perspective: the whole exam is 5.25 hours of test time. Months of preparation come down to a single afternoon at a test centre and one remote session three weeks earlier. Building the stamina for that is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
