GAMSAT books: what is worth buying

No book on this page is endorsed, approved or reviewed by ACER. Neither is anything we publish. If a book’s cover or sales page implies an official relationship with the exam body, that implication is false, and it tells you something about the publisher.

The only material ACER stands behind is its own. That is the first thing to buy and the only thing that is genuinely non-optional.

ACER produces practice material in two formats — e-booklets and online interactive practice tests covering all sections. Buying requires an ACER account.

• Practice Test A is included free with registration. Do not buy it separately and do not work through it early — it is the closest thing you have to a real sitting, so save it for a timed run once your preparation is underway.
• Four practice tests are available in total. Third-party sources report roughly A$45 for a full-length test and A$27 for a half-length one. Treat those two prices as unverified — the ACER portal requires an account and we could not read them directly. Check inside your own account.
• Before any of this, registration itself costs A$568 in Australia (including GST), £296 in the United Kingdom and €378 in Ireland.

ACER pays no commission to anybody. There is no affiliate programme to join and no discount code to find. That is exactly why every vendor-written “best GAMSAT books” list mentions it briefly and then spends the rest of the page elsewhere.

Line up reputation against monetisation and the pattern is uncomfortable:

• The highest-regarded materials— ACER official, Des O’Neill, and the Griffiths complete system — are direct-sale only or unmonetisable. No affiliate route exists for any of them.
• The easiest to monetise— Gold Standard sets on Amazon, plus Gold Standard’s own 10% programme, plus AceGAMSAT’s 40% — are the ones independent users criticise most.

That is the entire economic reason this page usually does not exist in an honest form. An affiliate page that leads with ACER and Des O’Neill earns nothing from its own best advice. We think that is the correct trade, and we would rather you could see the trade than trust us about it.

£167 buys the complete system: roughly 1,000 practice questions updated to reflect the 2026 test across seven colour-coded books, fully worked solutions, 100 real marked student essays with line-by-line feedback, science tutorial videos, question logs and a printable six-month study planner. The claimed individual value of the modules is £469.55.

Two terms are unusually good. “No time limit on access unlike most question banks being sold” — effectively lifetime, in a market where one year is generous. And a “30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. No questions asked if you aren’t satisfied just send me an email and I’ll happily refund you” — the cleanest refund term of any provider we looked at.

The author, Dr Peter J Griffiths, publishes a GMC registration number. You can check it on the GMC register yourself. In a market with a great deal of anonymous authorship, that is worth something.

What we cannot tell you: third-party review volume is thin. The Amazon listing for the Section I practice-questions title carries around 4.2 to 4.3 stars from only 16reviews, and much of the enthusiastic praise you will find is screenshotted forum posts displayed on Griffiths’ own sales page — self-selected marketing evidence rather than an independent sample.

Who should not buy it: anyone who wants a reference textbook. This is a practice-and-technique system. It will not teach you organic chemistry from scratch.

Gold Standard has the widest physical distribution in this market: real trade distributors in Australia, Europe and North America, and stock on Amazon in several countries. The Masters Series runs A$79.95 to A$999 direct, the 3-book set is A$125.10 on Amazon.com.au, and the “Heaps” volume of 10 full-length practice tests is £120 plus £12 shipping in the UK. Its free layer — a free practice test, a question of the day, worked solutions to ACER’s e-books on YouTube — is large and genuinely un-gated. Use that before you buy anything.

The caveat we are obliged to give you, given we are paid 10%:question quality is the contested part of this brand. There is a long-running Reddit thread titled “Why does everyone hate the Gold Standard Gamsat?”, and separate threads criticise the general chemistry material specifically. We have to be exact about the strength of that: Reddit was blocked to our research crawler, so this reached us as thread titles and search snippets and is not independently verified by us. It is a flag to go and read for yourself, not a verdict.

Who should not buy it: anyone buying one resource and expecting it to be authoritative. If you do buy, buy the practice tests rather than the science content — volume of full-length timed practice is the part of this catalogue nobody disputes.

A$350 per section volume, or A$1,000 for the complete set, down from A$1,400. Sold only at desoneill.online, not on Amazon, with no affiliate route of any kind.

Historically these were the most respected third-party GAMSAT materials in Australia. The problem is not quality, it is currency. The evidence conflicts and we are reporting both sides.The site is live with current 2026 pricing and active shipping claims. Against that, multiple third-party sources — several of them competitors with an obvious motive — state that the operation stopped producing new material around 2014 and that the content has not been updated to ACER’s format changes since.

We are not asserting either version. The defensible line is this: the materials remain purchasable at current prices, and their content is widely reported to predate ACER’s recent format changes. Before spending A$1,000, email the seller and ask what edition you are buying and when it was last revised. If you get no answer, that is an answer.

You will also find these volumes circulating second-hand on Gumtree and eBay, and shared illicitly as PDFs. We are not going to pretend that is not happening, but buying a photocopied PDF of a decade-old book is a poor use of study time regardless of the ethics.

The reputation.The most visible comment on the r/GAMSAT thread about AceGAMSAT reads “Acegamsat is s scam, please do not purchase”, with around 35 upvotes. A separate thread about fake reviews among GAMSAT providers records a user reporting that the company did not respond to pre-sales questions. Being precise about what that is worth: Reddit was blocked to our research crawler, so this reached us through search snippets and is not independently verified by us.

The terms.This part we did read directly. AceGAMSAT’s affiliate conditions require that “Affiliates must behave in a positive manner at all times when referring customers to AceGAMSAT” and reserve the right to cancel the agreement at any time without notice. You cannot contractually promise to stay positive and also publish an independent review. Every site carrying an AceGAMSAT link has agreed to that clause, whether or not it tells you.

To be fair to the product rather than only to the argument: the A$397 course is advertised as 16 prep books covering science content, strategy, practice questions and trial tests, delivered as downloads, with a free Essay Bible eBook as a lead magnet. Its refund window is 7 days and explicitly discretionary — “if deemed acceptable”. Individual title prices are not published on its category page, so we could not verify them.

• ACER practice-material prices (~A$45 full, ~A$27 half) are third-party sourced; the portal requires an account.
• Amazon’s book commission rate (~4.5%, 24-hour cookie) is corroborated across several 2026 rate tables but the official schedule is behind an Associates login.
• Reddit and Trustpilot were blocked to our crawler. Every sentiment claim above is labelled as reported community discussion, not verified fact.
• The Gold Standard UK book set listed around £268.75 on Amazon.co.uk is likely a different or larger set than the A$125.10 Australian 3-book set — we could not confirm the contents match, so we have not put them side by side.
• Individual AceGAMSAT title prices are not published.
• Des O’Neill’s edition dates, access terms and refund policy are not published anywhere we could find.
