Graduate entry medicine
Graduate entry medicine in the UK
Graduate entry medicine in the UK is a 4-year accelerated medical degree for people who already hold a degree. Some courses ask for the GAMSAT and others ask for the UCAT. This page sets out which is which, what degree you need, when to apply and how the course is funded.
The short version
- UK graduate entry medicine courses run for 4 years. Most use UCAS code A101.
- Our dataset has 10 graduate entry courses that use the GAMSAT. Another 12 use the UCAT.
- Most ask for a 2:1. A few accept a 2:2 if you also hold a master’s.
- The UCAS deadline is 15 October, 18:00 UK time.
- If you are from England, a fee loan covers part of the first-year fee. The NHS Bursary starts in year 2.
What graduate entry medicine in the UK is
A graduate entry course teaches medicine in 4 years. Every graduate entry course on this page runs for 4 years. Most require a degree, and many accept a predicted grade if you are still in your final year. Oxford says around 40% of its applicants are still undergraduates when they apply.
Standard-entry medicine (UCAS code A100) runs for 5 or 6 years. Two A100 courses, at Plymouth and Exeter, take the GAMSAT from people without a degree. That route is covered on the GAMSAT UK page.
UK graduate entry medicine courses that use the GAMSAT
These are the graduate entry (A101 or A102) courses in our UK dataset.
- City St George's, University of London, A101
- ScotGEM (St Andrews / Dundee), A101
- Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, A102
- University of Liverpool, A101
- Swansea University, A101
- Ulster University, A101
- University of Chester, A101
- University of Surrey, A101
- University of East Anglia, A101
- University of Worcester, A101
Several of these also accept the UCAT in place of the GAMSAT. Score thresholds, section minimums and international access for each one are on the GAMSAT UK page. The test itself is the same in every country, so you can practise with our free GAMSAT practice test.

Degree class requirements for graduate entry medicine
A 2:1 is the standard minimum. Two things vary between schools: whether a lower class can be offset, and whether the subject matters.
- A 2:2 with a further degree.Warwick accepts a 2:2 with a master’s or doctorate. Nottingham accepts a 2:2 with a taught master’s at merit or above. On the GAMSAT side, Liverpool, Chester and Worcester accept a 2:2 with a master’s or doctorate, and City St George’s accepts a 2:2 with a postgraduate pass.
- Any subject. Cambridge, Newcastle, Nottingham, Southampton and Warwick take a degree in any subject. Southampton says no preference is given by subject.
- Science only.King’s wants a bioscience with biology and chemistry content, and excludes nursing and psychology. Manchester wants a life science or health profession. Oxford wants an applied or experimental science. On the GAMSAT side, Pears Cumbria wants a bioscience or allied healthcare degree.
- Extra school-level science. Oxford requires A-level chemistry unless your degree is in chemistry or biochemistry. Queen Mary asks non-bioscience graduates for A-level sciences at BB. Nottingham asks for A-level biology at B if your degree has little biology.
Sheffield’s course is limited to life science graduates who meet at least two widening participation criteria, such as free school meals or being a care leaver.
UCAS deadline for graduate entry medicine
Home applicants apply to every course on this page through UCAS. For 2027 entry, the deadline for most medicine courses was 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. UCAS says it is unusual for these courses to consider late applications.
Some schools add a second step after UCAS:
- Oxford requires its Supplementary Application Form and two extra references by 6pm on 22 October.
- Cambridge sends a course questionnaire that includes a work experience log. It scores experience and invites about 80 applicants to interview.
- Nottingham requires you to sit the UCAT in the same year you apply. Bangor requires a UCAT taken within one year of applying.
The extra forms and deadlines at GAMSAT schools, such as Liverpool and ScotGEM, are listed on the GAMSAT UK page. GAMSAT sitting dates are on the GAMSAT dates page.
Interviews for graduate entry medicine in the UK
Every course in the UCAT table interviews before it makes offers. Most use multiple mini interviews (MMIs). Oxford and Queen Mary use online panel interviews. Southampton runs a selection day with panel interviews and group exercises.
At several schools, the UCAT score decides who is interviewed:
- Newcastle uses the UCAT score as the sole basis for ranking applicants for interview.
- Southampton ranks applicants by UCAT score and invites the top candidates.
- Sheffield sets a minimum UCAT score of 1800 out of 2700 for 2027 entry.
- Queen Mary stops at first shortlisting if your total UCAT score is below the fourth decile, or if your situational judgement test (SJT) result is Band 4.
- Manchester does not consider SJT Band 3 or 4. Nottingham does not consider Band 4.
Funding graduate entry medicine: students from England
These are the 2026/27 rules for students ordinarily resident in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own funding bodies.
| Year of course | Tuition fee support | Living costs |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Student Finance England fee loan up to £6,125. You pay the rest of the fee yourself. | Student Finance England |
| Years 2 to 4 | Fee loan up to £5,860, plus an NHS Bursary tuition fee contribution paid to your university | NHS Bursary grant and means-tested bursary, plus a reduced-rate loan of up to £2,828 (£3,970 in London, £2,122 at home) |
You can get a fee loan for graduate entry medicine even though you already hold a degree. The gap in year 1 depends on your fee. The standard full-time fee loan for 2026/27 is £9,790, so on a fee at that level you would pay £3,665 yourself.
To get the NHS Bursary you must have been ordinarily resident in England at the start of the course, and not have moved to England mainly to study. Your course must also be within the Office for Students intake target. You apply every year. If you move from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland to study, you apply to SAAS, Student Finance Wales or Student Finance NI instead.
