GEMSAS explained

GEMSAS is the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System: a centralised application and matching service for domestic applicants to graduate-entry medicine at the universities that belong to GEMPASS Australia. It is operated by VTAC, the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre — GEMSAS correspondence arrives from vtac.edu.au addresses.

It is domestic-only. GEMSAS is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and Australian permanent humanitarian visa holders. Everybody else applies directly to each university.

GEMSAS does not run the medical schools’ selection. Each school sets its own minimum GPA, its own GAMSAT requirement, its own GPA formula and its own ranking weightings; GEMSAS collects one application, calculates your GPA, and matches you against those rules in the order you preferenced.

Baseline eligibility is a completed, or final-year, three-year full-time equivalent bachelor or honours degree in any discipline. Full-time or part-time both count. There are no prerequisite subjects at any GEMSAS school, and GEMSAS states it gives no preference to any field of study. Final-year applicants receive conditional offers.

One practical trap: your qualification is assessed for equivalency afteryou submit. GEMSAS provides no pre-application assessments, so if your degree is unusual — a two-year bachelor, an embedded degree, a conversion year or an overseas qualification — you are checking each school’s entry yourself before you pay.

Graduate-entry medicine in Australia is not all GEMSAS. Three universities using GAMSAT take applications directly, and preferencing them costs none of your six GEMSAS preferences.

A common error is worth flagging in the other direction. ACER’s page states that UWA processes some applications directly — that covers UWA dentistry and podiatric medicine only. UWA medicine for domestic applicants runs through GEMSAS.

You list up to six medical schools in ranked order, and for each one you nominate which place types you would accept. The application fee is $275, payable by the closing deadline. Submitting more than one application does not help: only the first is assessed, regardless of which one you paid for.

If you are not offered your higher preference you are considered for the lower ones. What makes the order consequential is that several schools attach real, scored value to where they sit on your list.

One more thing worth reading twice: GEMSAS advises selecting all place types you could accept, because limiting your selection reduces the number of places that can be offered to you. The exception is the full-fee category. Melbourne and Notre Dame both warn that once a full-fee place is offered it cannot be swapped for a Commonwealth Supported or Bonded place, and Melbourne adds that students enrolled in a full-fee place are ineligible to apply for a CSP in a later year while enrolled. Do not list full-fee unless you can actually pay for it.

Bonded is not a lower-threshold entry route, which is the most common misunderstanding here. It is a place type. Schools rank applicants once, then allocate CSP first and BMP second down that single merit order. Accepting BMP consideration widens the pool of places available to you without changing your rank.

Where you list place types in order matters at some schools and not others. Melbourne, UQ and UWA disregard the order and look only at what you included; Griffith and Wollongong use the order you gave. Macquarie has no CSP or BMP at all — every domestic place there is full-fee.

Rural originmeans living in an MM2–MM7 area for five consecutive years or ten cumulative years, under the Modified Monash Model. For the 2027 intake GEMSAS uses MMM 2023, based on 2021 census data. Most medical schools are required to allocate at least 25% of their Commonwealth Supported Places to applicants from a rural background.

The mechanism matters more than the label. At most schools rurality works as a sub-quota: you compete within a reserved pool, so the effective shortlisting threshold for that cohort is lower — UQ’s own wording is that “the interview short listing threshold may be lower for this cohort”. At other schools it is an explicit score adjustment: Deakin adds 4% for MM2 and 8% for MM3–7 to the combined GPA and GAMSAT score, Macquarie adds 3% to the weighted GPA, and UWA makes a Rural Rating 25% of the entire offer ranking. Deakin’s RTS Tier 1 goes further and waives both the GAMSAT requirement and the ten-year currency rule.

Rural evidence goes to GEMSAS as a single email with a statutory declaration, supporting evidence and the Rural Coversheet, by 5pm AEST on 15 June 2026. Rates notices are not accepted. Holiday homes, temporary stays and campus accommodation outside a rural area do not count. You are contacted only if you are found ineligible.

Every participating school offers a First Nations entry pathway, and Commonwealth Supported Places in medicine became uncapped for Indigenous students from 1 January 2026. Several of these pathways sit outside GEMSAS entirely and outside the GAMSAT requirement: Melbourne requires neither GAMSAT nor GEMSAS if Melbourne is the only preference, Griffith’s First Peoples Health Pathway does not require GAMSAT, Wollongong requires neither GAMSAT nor Casper and charges no application fee, and UQ allows a direct application and a GEMSAS application simultaneously. Evidence is typically a Confirmation of Aboriginality bearing the Common Seal of an incorporated Indigenous organisation.

Two of these catch people out. The 29 May close is for the application and the payment, and late applications are not accepted at all. And Wollongong requires two extra forms that do not go through GEMSAS: the Admissions Bonus Form by 15 June and the campus, place-type and track nomination form by 27 September, both direct to UOW. Missing them costs you bonuses or the offer itself.

GEMSAS calculates your GPA centrally — but it calculates a different GPA for each school on your list, because the schools use 5 different formulas. It also converts WAM to GPA where a school accepts one, applies rural and adjustment claims, and distributes your standardised interview score down your preference list.

It does not tell you any of this in advance. There are no pre-application assessments, and the paid GPA service does not open until mid-September — three and a half months after applications close.
