GPA and GAMSAT calculator

Your GPA is not one number either. GEMSAS runs five genuinely different calculations across ten school entries, and the figure that decides your Melbourne application is not the figure that decides your UWA application. This calculates each one separately.

The “1:2:3 everywhere” claim is wrong

Almost every third-party guide says GEMSAS weights your final three years 1:2:3 and divides by six. That is true at six of the ten school entries and wrong at the other four. Melbourne weights the final year ×2 and divides by five. Griffith and UWA do not weight the years at all. UQ has no GPA years whatsoever— it takes a credit-weighted mean across the entire degree. Deakin adds a fifth variant that drops the final year outright.

A calculator that prints one number cannot tell you that you clear one school’s minimum and miss another’s on the same transcript. Load the worked example below and watch it happen.

Your degree

Nothing is sent anywhere — this runs entirely in your browser.

One GPA year = 1.0 FTE. If a standard year is 8 subjects at 6 points, enter 48.

GEMSAS uses percentage marks wherever an official one exists. Letter columns are an approximation.

GEMSAS applies these after the base GPA — and each school attaches them to a different thing.

Your subjects, most recent first

A study period is a block of subjects you took at the same time — usually a semester or trimester. List the most recent first. GPA years are filled backwards from the top until each holds 1.0 FTE, so period boundaries and GPA-year boundaries rarely line up.

We do not print a combined GPA/GAMSAT ranking score, because one cannot be computed. Most GEMSAS schools standardise both figures against the applicant pool before combining them, and that pool is not known until applications close.

The single most mis-stated fact in third-party GEMSAS guides. Melbourne weights the final year ×2, not ×3, and divides by 5. Verbatim: "the final-minus-2 x 1, the final-minus-1 x 2 and the final x 2".

Graded study: Melbourne does not publish a minimum FTE of graded study per GPA year on its GEMSAS entry.

Postgraduate study: Honours is included only if completed by mid-year of the application year with results available; otherwise the three pre-Honours undergraduate years are weighted instead. A PhD is used for re-ranking only, and must be within 10 years, cognate, and within strict quotas.

No GPA years. UQ takes a credit-weighted mean across 3.00 FTE of study — every subject you entered, with no 3 FTE ceiling and no year weighting.

  • A GEMSAS GPA between 5.0 and 5.75 triggers an individual UQ re-review for equivalency against UQ’s own admission procedure. The outcome of that review cannot be predicted here.
UQ GPA rules in full

The genuine outlier. Verbatim: "UQ’s GPA assessments are weighted by credit value of the subjects rather than the year in which the subjects were completed." Every subject studied while enrolled in the key degree counts, whether or not it counted toward the award, and combined degrees contribute both halves. Applicants whose GEMSAS GPA falls between 5.0 and 5.75 are individually re-reviewed by UQ against its own method, and that review is not computable.

Graded study: No graded-study threshold, because UQ does not use GPA years at all.

Postgraduate study: A postgraduate coursework or research degree can itself be the key degree at UQ, in which case the whole-of-degree calculation runs across it.

Bonuses attach to: the unweighted average GAMSAT score — UQ applies two rural adjustments there, not to the GPA.

What we assumed, and where GEMSAS is silent

  • Credit-weighted year averages. GEMSAS does not state whether the average within a GPA year is credit-weighted or a plain mean across subjects. Only UQ says so explicitly. We credit-weight, because the entire FTE framework is credit-based — but where your subjects carry different credit values, GEMSAS may produce a different figure.
  • Boundary subjects. Where a subject straddles a GPA-year boundary, its credit is split pro-rata across the two years so each year lands on exactly 1.0 FTE. With an even full-time load this never happens and every subject falls whole into one year.
  • Empty GPA years. Where a GPA year contains no graded study, GEMSAS drops it and applies a reduced-year weighting that it publishes only for UWA (divide by two). For the weighted schools we re-scale by the weights of the years that remain, and flag the result.
  • Credit, exchange and referred cases. Specified and unspecified credit, exchange results, concurrent awards and entirely ungraded degrees are resolved by GEMSAS case by case, and several are referred to the medical school for manual checking. Those outcomes are unpredictable by design and are not modelled here.

GEMSAS runs its own estimator, and your assessed GPA is calculated only after you apply — it states plainly that it gives no pre-application assessments. Where this tool and GEMSAS disagree, GEMSAS is right.

How the GEMSAS GPA is calculated

GEMSAS publishes one methodology document and then lets each medical school override parts of it. The shared skeleton runs like this.

  1. Identify the key degree. The most recently completed eligible qualification inside the school’s currency window. Recognised bachelor degrees of three years or more, and completed standalone Honours years, are accepted everywhere; postgraduate qualifications vary by school.
  2. Convert every result to the 7-point scale. Where an official percentage mark exists, Column A of the conversion table is used. Otherwise the letter column matching the awarding institution applies.
  3. Bucket subjects backwards into GPA years. A GPA year is 1.0 FTE — one year of full-time study. It is not a calendar year and not a level of study. GEMSAS’s own example: if a full-time load is eight subjects of six credit points, a GPA year is 48 credit points, even where those credits were earned across two or more calendar years.
  4. Average each GPA year. This is the one step GEMSAS does not fully specify — see the assumptions panel above.
  5. Handle ungraded subjects. A passed ungraded subject fills FTE but contributes no grade point. A failed one is treated as a fail. Each school sets a minimum of graded study per GPA year, below which the year is disregarded entirely.
  6. Apply the school’s year weighting. All five variants are listed below.
  7. Apply bonuses afterwards. GEMSAS is explicit that bonus points for additional study are not included in the base GPA. They are added later, and only at schools whose selection process uses them.

Two rules cut against the grain and are worth knowing. Where you have more than 3 FTEof eligible study, only the most recent 3 FTE is used — at every school except UQ. Where you have less than 3 FTE, the shortfall is made up from the next most recent eligible qualification, which is how a one-year Honours degree becomes a final year sitting on top of two years of the preceding bachelor.

The tie-break that runs in your favour

When a block of concurrent subjects straddles a GPA-year boundary, GEMSAS has to decide which of them lands in the more recent — and at most schools more heavily weighted — year. Verbatim:

“Should there be a choice between two or more subjects of equivalent credit points which were studied concurrently, the subjects will be distributed with higher subject results going to the more recent GPA year.”

Higher results go to the more recent year. At a 3:2:1 school that is worth real points, and it is omitted from every third-party explanation we have seen. The calculator above implements it: within each study period, subjects are ordered by result before they are allocated.

44 and below0
GEMSAS Grading System Conversion Table, Column A. Verified 28 July 2026.

Two features of this table matter more than the rest. The top band is flat.A mark of 80 and a mark of 100 both convert to 7. Anything above 80 is invisible to your GPA, which changes where extra effort is worth spending. Automated readings of the published grid routinely mis-align this row and report an 84–80 band at 6.75 — that value belongs to a letter column, not to percentages.

And there is a cliff at 50. A mark of 50 scores 4.0. A mark of 49 scores zero, not 3.9 — unless your institution designated it a conceded pass, which scores 3.5. One mark is worth four grade points at that boundary.

Where no percentage mark exists, GEMSAS maps your institution to one of seven letter columns instead. The calculator supports those columns, but they are transcribed from a visually complex grid and we treat them as an approximation. GEMSAS converts non-Australian transcripts case by case, "taking the minimum and maximum marks into consideration", and publishes no deterministic mapping for any foreign scale. No calculator can faithfully produce a GEMSAS GPA from an overseas transcript — this one included.

Read that table as five formulas, not ten. Here they are in full, including the Deakin variant that only applies in one specific circumstance.

FormulaWho uses it

(Final−1 × 5 + Final−2 × 1) ÷ 6Deakin only, and only where the final year was 2020 with less than 0.25 FTE completed before 2020. Deakin excludes all 2020 results.

Melbourneis the one most often mis-stated. Its own entry reads: “GPA years will be weighted: the final-minus-2 x 1, the final-minus-1 x 2 and the final x 2.” Final year ×2, divisor 5.

UQis the genuine outlier. It has no GPA years at all: “UQ’s GPA assessments are weighted by credit value of the subjects rather than the year in which the subjects were completed.” Every subject studied while enrolled in the key degree counts — whether or not it counted toward the award — and a combined degree contributes both halves. If your later years are stronger than your earlier ones, UQ will give you your lowest Australian GPA. If they are weaker, UQ will give you your highest. There is also a band between 5.0 and 5.75 where UQ re-reviews the GPA by hand against its own procedure, and nothing can predict that outcome.

Griffith and UWA weight nothing, so a strong first year counts exactly as much as a strong final year. UWA divides by two where only two GPA years exist, and it is the only school that ignores specified and unspecified credit and exchange results entirely.

The three Australian schools outside GEMSAS

GAMSAT medicine in Australia is not all GEMSAS. Three schools take applications directly and assess GPA under their own rules.

SchoolRouteGPA position
FlindersDirect to Flinders (NOT GEMSAS)GPA 5.00 to apply (unweighted); selection uses a weighted GPA
SydneyDirect to Sydney (NOT GEMSAS)MD/DMD GPA 5.0 (rural 4.5). GPA is a hurdle only and a second-order tiebreaker.
TasmaniaDirect to UTAS (NOT GEMSAS)Unweighted GPA 5.25 — note this is NOT the 6.5 that circulates on prep sites
Verified against ACER's admissions listing and each university's own pages, 28 July 2026.

Because these three sit outside GEMSAS, preferencing them costs none of your six GEMSAS preferences — they are separate applications with separate deadlines. The calculator does not produce a figure for them, because none of the three publishes the GEMSAS year weightings and we will not model a formula that has not been stated.

Which makes the six preferences worth as much thought as the GPA itself, because they are the part of an Australian application you fully control. GEMSAS interviews you at one school only, and the standardised score from that interview may then be considered by the schools further down your list — how GEMSAS works sets out the preference and interview rules that decide which school gets to interview you in the first place.

How GPA and GAMSAT combine

They are weighted differently at every school, and at two schools GPA barely functions as a score at all.

SchoolHow GPA and GAMSAT are balanced
ANU50:50 standardised GPA to standardised overall GAMSAT
DeakinEqual weighting of GPA and GAMSAT, plus adjustments
Griffith50:50 unweighted GPA as percentage to overall GAMSAT
Macquarie50:50 weighted GPA to GAMSAT at interview. At OFFER stage GAMSAT drops out entirely — 50% GPA, 50% MMI

Notre Dame Fremantle30:30:30:10 — GAMSAT, GPA, Casper, bonus points
Notre Dame Sydney30:30:30:10 — GAMSAT, GPA, Casper, bonus points
UQMD: 50:50 unweighted GAMSAT to GPA, GPA as tiebreaker. DMD: unweighted GAMSAT 70% plus SJT 30% — the heaviest GAMSAT weighting anywhere in this dataset.
UWAMD shortlist 60% GPA / 40% GAMSAT; MD final GPA 30% / GAMSAT 20% / interview 50%. DMD shortlist is 50:50.
WollongongNeither GPA nor GAMSAT is ranked. Interview rank is 50% Casper plus 50% UOW admissions bonuses.
From each school's GEMSAS entry, verified 28 July 2026. Interview ranking and offer ranking use different formulas — see each school's page.

Two of these are worth restating. At Wollongong, neither GPA nor GAMSAT is ranked at all. Both are hurdles. Interview ranking is 50% Casper and 50% admissions bonuses, and at offer stage GPA, GAMSAT and Casper are all excluded. A 6.9 GPA and a 5.6 GPA are worth precisely the same at Wollongong once both clear 5.5.

At Macquarie, GAMSAT drops out after the interview. Shortlisting is 50:50 GPA and GAMSAT; the offer is 50% GPA and 50% MMI. Your GPA is weighted twice; your GAMSAT once.

We deliberately do not print a combined score. Most schools standardiseboth figures against the applicant pool before combining them — ANU and UWA say so explicitly — and the pool is unknown until applications close. Any site showing you a single “combined GEMSAS score” is inventing the standardisation step. For the GAMSAT side of the equation, see the GAMSAT score calculator, which shows the weighted and unweighted overalls separately for the same reason.

What GPA do you actually need

The published minimums run from 5.0 to 5.5 across the GEMSAS schools, and they are minimums — floors to be eligible, not competitive bars. Clearing 5.0 at a school that interviews on a 50:50 GPA/GAMSAT rank tells you almost nothing about whether you would be shortlisted.

Three things move the real bar far more than the published minimum. Rural sub-quotas mean rural applicants compete within a reserved pool, so the effective shortlisting threshold for that cohort is lower — UQ says so in as many words. Bonuses and adjustments are applied to different things at different schools, so an identical 4% is worth more at one than another. And the schools that publish figures publish different kinds of figure: see cutoffs by university, where every number is labelled with what it actually is.

What this tool cannot do

GEMSAS does not state whether the average within a GPA year is credit-weighted or a plain mean across subjects. Only UQ says so explicitly. We credit-weight, because the entire FTE framework is credit-based — but where your subjects carry different credit values, GEMSAS may produce a different figure.

It also cannot resolve the cases GEMSAS itself resolves by hand: unspecified credit, prior study below AQF 7, concurrent awards, entirely ungraded degrees, and any calculation where two or more GPA years hold less than 0.375 FTE of graded study. GEMSAS refers those to the medical school. And GEMSAS assesses your qualification only afteryou submit — it states plainly that it provides no pre-application assessments.

Common questions

How is GPA calculated for medicine?

For the 10 GEMSAS school entries, every subject result is converted to a 7-point grade point, then subjects are allocated backwards into three GPA years of 1.0 FTE each — final year, final−1 and final−2. Each year is averaged, and the school’s weighting is applied.

Six entries use (final ×3 + final−1 ×2 + final−2 ×1) ÷ 6. Melbourne uses ×2, ×2, ×1 ÷ 5. Griffith and UWA do not weight at all. UQ uses no GPA years and takes a credit-weighted mean of the whole degree. That is 5 formulas, counting the Deakin COVID variant.

What GPA do I need?

The published minimums across GEMSAS run from 5.0 to 5.5 on the 7-point scale. Notre Dame sets the highest bar at 5.2 weighted; Wollongong and UWA both require 5.5, though Wollongong then stops using the number entirely.

Those are eligibility floors, not competitive scores. At schools that rank 50:50 on GPA and GAMSAT, meeting the minimum is the start of the process rather than the end of it — and because the schools calculate GPA differently, the same transcript can clear one minimum and miss another.

Is Casper required?

At three of the ten GEMSAS entries: both Notre Dame campuses and Wollongong. Notre Dame weights it 30% of the interview ranking and Wollongong 50%. Curtin also requires it, despite not being a GEMSAS school. The other seven GEMSAS entries do not use it at all. See Casper in Australia for the format, cost, and the test-type renaming that makes booking the wrong one an expensive mistake this cycle.

Do all universities weight GPA the same way?

No, and this is the single most repeated error in GEMSAS content. The claim that all schools weight 1:2:3 is wrong at four of the ten entries.

Melbourne weights the final year ×2 rather than ×3 and divides by five. Griffith and UWA apply no year weighting. UQ discards the year structure completely and credit-weights the whole degree. Deakin adds a variant in which the final year is dropped and the remaining two are weighted ×5 and ×1. Run the same transcript through the calculator above with all ten selected and the spread is visible immediately.

Does a mark above 80 improve my GPA?

No. Column A of the GEMSAS conversion table is flat at 7 from 80 through 100, so an 85 and a 95 are identical for GPA purposes. The bands that reward effort sit lower down: every five marks between 50 and 79 is worth half a grade point, and the jump from 49 to 50 is worth four.

Can this calculate a GPA from an overseas transcript?

GEMSAS converts non-Australian transcripts case by case, "taking the minimum and maximum marks into consideration", and publishes no deterministic mapping for any foreign scale. No calculator can faithfully produce a GEMSAS GPA from an overseas transcript — this one included.
