Graduate entry medicine in Australia
Graduate entry medicine in Australia is a four-year medical degree for people who already hold a bachelor degree. There are 12 graduate-entry medical programs in our dataset. This page lists each one with what it requires to apply.
The short version
- 12 graduate-entry medical programs in our dataset admit through GAMSAT. Of these, 10 apply through GEMSAS and 2 (Flinders, Sydney) take direct applications.
- You need a bachelor degree in any discipline. GEMSAS schools set no prerequisite subjects.
- Every program asks for at least 50 in each GAMSAT section. The overall minimum runs up to 55 (UWA).
- The minimum GPA is 5.0 at 8 programs and up to 5.5 elsewhere, on a 7-point scale.
- Casper is required at 3 programs: Notre Dame Fremantle, Notre Dame Sydney, Wollongong.
- Every program except Sydney’s standard stream interviews before making offers.

Medical school entry requirements in Australia
Graduate-entry programs in Australia assess the same five things. The weight each one carries differs by school.
- A bachelor degree. GEMSAS requires a completed three-year full-time bachelor or honours degree in any discipline, or to be in its final year when you apply. Most GEMSAS schools want the degree finished within the last ten years. UWA has no such limit.
- A GAMSAT score. Results stay valid for 4 years in Australia. The September sitting in the year you apply cannot be used for that intake. Melbourne, Notre Dame and UQ re-average the three sections, Sydney ranks on section scores and Wollongong uses GAMSAT only as a hurdle. The GAMSAT in Australia page compares the scoring methods.
- A grade point average. Schools calculate it differently. Most weight recent years more heavily, Griffith and UWA weight all three years equally, and UQ averages the whole degree. The GPA and GAMSAT calculator runs each school’s method on your own results.
- Casper, at 3 programs. At Wollongong, Casper ranks you for interview alongside its admissions bonuses, and GAMSAT and GPA are hurdles only. Dates and fees are on the Casper test in Australia page.
- An interview. Deakin, Macquarie, Melbourne, UQ and Wollongong use a multiple mini interview (MMI). Through GEMSAS you interview at one school only, and that score can be passed to your lower-preference schools.
Every school in the table runs a First Nations entry pathway, and most reserve places for rural-background applicants. Some of these pathways waive GAMSAT. The pathways to medicine in Australia page maps those routes, along with school-leaver entry.
GEMSAS and the schools outside it
GEMSAS handles 10 school entries at 9 universities. The other 3 Australian GAMSAT schools sit outside it.
GEMSAS is the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System. You submit one application, pay one fee and rank up to six preferences. For 2027 entry, applications opened on 1 May 2026 and closed at 5pm AEST on 29 May 2026. Place offers go out at the end of October or early November.
How the six preferences interact with interviews and quotas is set out on GEMSAS explained.
The schools outside GEMSAS need their own applications:
- Flinders takes applications directly. It is the only Australian school that publishes real GAMSAT cutoffs, and they differ by sub-quota. Interview score, GPA and GAMSAT count equally in its final ranking.
- Sydney takes applications directly. It ranks the standard Doctor of Medicine on GAMSAT section scores, uses GPA as a hurdle and holds no interview in the standard metropolitan stream. It does not publish past thresholds.
- Tasmania takes applications directly. It is covered in the next section.
A direct application does not use any of your six GEMSAS preferences. You can apply to Flinders and Sydney as well as six GEMSAS schools.
Tasmania: undergraduate entry with a graduate stream
Tasmania does not run a graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine. Its medicine program is the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedScMD), a five-year combined degree that school leavers enter with ATAR and UCAT.
Applicants who already have tertiary study enter through a GAMSAT stream instead. That stream asks for 50 in each section and an unweighted GPA of 5.25. Tasmania does not interview.
