Medical school GPA requirements in Australia

Every Australian medical school that uses GAMSAT sets a minimum GPA on the 7-point scale. This page lists each school's minimum, which years of your study it counts, and what you can do if your GPA is below the line.

The short version

  • The minimum GPA for Australian medical schools runs from 5.0 to 5.5 on the 7-point scale.
  • The minimum makes you eligible. It does not get you an interview.
  • Most schools count only your most recent three years of full-time study, so newer study can replace weaker years.
  • If your GPA is low, look at further study, the schools that use GPA as a hurdle only, and Flinders, which shortlists for interview on GAMSAT alone.

Minimum GPA for each Australian medical school

10 school entries go through GEMSAS. 3 schools take applications directly.

TasmaniaDirect5.25Unweighted. This is a five-year undergraduate-entry combined degree.

“Weighted 3:2:1” means your final year counts three times and your first counted year once. Melbourne weights 2:2:1. Griffith and UWA do not weight the years. UQ averages every subject in the degree by credit value. The formulas, and a calculator that runs each one, are on the GPA and GAMSAT calculator page.

Macquarie also accepts a WAM of 65 in place of the GPA minimum. Sydney’s rural stream accepts a GPA of 4.5.

The GPA that gets an interview is higher than the minimum

Griffith says the GPA needed for interview “is likely to be significantly higher than 5.0 out of 7.0”, and Macquarie says the same. Griffith adds: “A high GAMSAT can offset a slightly lower GPA and vice versa.”

UWA publishes the average GPA of domestic applicants it interviewed for 2026 entry: 6.82. Notre Dame publishes the same kind of figure: 6.60 at Fremantle and 6.74 at Sydney for the 2026 intake. These are averages. Some interviewees had lower GPAs, and none of the figures is a cutoff.

Which years of study count towards your GPA

A GPA year is 1.0 FTE, which is one year of full-time study. At the GEMSAS schools, your GPA comes from your key degree: the most recent eligible qualification you completed. If you have more than three years of eligible study, only the most recent 3.0 FTE is used. Older results drop out.

  • Most GEMSAS schoolsuse the most recent 3.0 FTE. ANU’s example: in a five-year combined degree, the first two years are not counted.
  • UQ uses every graded subject in the key degree, whatever its length.
  • Flinders uses the last three full-time years of your most recent bachelor degree. Postgraduate qualifications are not counted at all.

Most schools also have a 10-year rule. Your degree must fall within 10 years of the application close or course start, or you must show more recent study. ANU, for example, waives the rule if you have completed 0.5 FTE of bachelor-level study or higher in the last 10 years. UWA has no 10-year rule: “we will consider applicants with degrees older than 10 years”.

GPA too low for medicine: what you can do

A GPA below a school’s minimum rules you out at that school. It does not rule you out of medicine. These are the options the schools’ own rules allow.

1. Add recent graded study

Because most schools count the most recent 3.0 FTE, new study pushes your oldest year out of the calculation. At a 3:2:1 school the newest year also carries the most weight. ANU’s example: after a one-year standalone Honours degree, the Honours year becomes your final GPA year and the other 2.0 FTE comes from the last two years of your bachelor degree.

Check that the study is graded. Ungraded passes fill the year but add no grade points, and most schools set a minimum of graded study per year.

2. Know how each school treats postgraduate study

Postgraduate study helps at some schools and is ignored at others. These are the rules in each GEMSAS school entry.

SchoolPostgraduate study and your GPA
ANUMasters by coursework is included in the GPA. Masters by Research and PhD are excluded from it. Embedded or professional Honours enters the GPA but earns no bonus; standalone Honours earns the 2% bonus.
DeakinMasters by coursework counts if completed by 31 July 2026. Masters by Research and PhD are excluded from the GPA, though either may satisfy the currency requirement.
GriffithA completed PhD means the overall GPA is deemed 7.0. A Masters by Research is treated as 7.0 for its duration, to a maximum of two years. Graded components of a coursework Masters are used.
MacquarieMacquarie keeps the ×3 / ×2 / ×1 pattern but changes what fills the slots. Postgraduate coursework goes into the ×3 slot as a whole; a completed MRes or PhD goes into the ×3 slot as a whole and is capped at 7.0, with the bachelor or Honours below it. Only one postgraduate qualification is used.
MelbourneHonours is included only if completed by mid-year of the application year with results available; otherwise the three pre-Honours undergraduate years are weighted instead. A PhD is used for re-ranking only, and must be within 10 years, cognate, and within strict quotas.
Notre Dame (both campuses)Masters by coursework is included in the GPA. Masters by Research and PhD are excluded and earn bonus points instead.
UQA postgraduate coursework or research degree can itself be the key degree at UQ, in which case the whole-of-degree calculation runs across it.
UWAA completed PhD means the GPA is deemed 7.0. A completed Masters by Research is excluded from the calculation, and 0.2 is added to the overall GPA instead. Graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and coursework Masters all count inside the 3 FTE.
WollongongMasters by coursework is included in the GPA. Masters by Research and PhD are excluded.
FlindersGraduate certificates, graduate diplomas, Masters and PhDs are not counted in the wGPA or the selection rank.

3. Complete a further degree

A newly completed eligible degree becomes your key degree, and your GPA is calculated from it. Where it is shorter than 3.0 FTE, the rest comes from your next most recent eligible qualification. Rules on shorter degrees differ: ANU considers one- and two-year graduate entry bachelor degrees only if you already hold a three-year bachelor degree, and UWA accepts two-year bachelor degrees and one-year conversion degrees.

4. Apply where GPA counts for less

  • Wollongong uses GPA as a hurdle only. Once you clear it, a higher GPA does not improve your rank. The interview ranking is Casper and admissions bonuses.
  • Sydney uses GPA as a hurdle, then only to separate applicants with equal rank.
  • Flinders shortlists for interview on overall GAMSAT score alone. Your wGPA is calculated only if you pass the interview, and it is then one third of the final rank.
  • Notre Dame gives GPA 30% of the interview ranking, alongside GAMSAT, Casper and bonus points.

How Casper is used at Notre Dame and Wollongong is on the Casper test page. Interviews at each school are covered on medical school interviews.

UK and Ireland: degree class instead of GPA

UK and Irish graduate-entry courses do not use a GPA. They set a degree classification as a pass or fail gate, then rank on GAMSAT, interview or both.

  • UK:most courses ask for a 2:1. City St George’s, Liverpool, Chester and Worcester also consider a 2:2 with a postgraduate qualification. Keele and Sunderland do not accept a postgraduate qualification in place of the 2:1. Plymouth and Exeter do not require a degree.
  • Ireland:UCC, UCD, UL and RCSI ask for a second-class honours grade 1 (2H1). A First is worth the same as a 2H1. After that, GAMSAT ranks EU applicants. Galway’s new course, from 2027, accepts a 2H2.

The full requirements are on GAMSAT in the UK and GAMSAT in Ireland.

Common questions

What GPA do you need for medicine in Australia?
The minimum is 5.0 to 5.5 on the 7-point scale, depending on the school. The GPA of interviewed applicants is usually much higher: UWA's 2026-entry interviewees averaged 6.82.
Is a GPA of 5.0 enough for medicine?
It meets the minimum at most schools. Griffith and Macquarie both say the GPA needed for interview is likely to be significantly higher than 5.0.
Can a Masters degree raise my GPA for medicine?
At some schools. ANU, Deakin and Notre Dame include a Masters by coursework in the GPA, and Macquarie puts it in the most heavily weighted slot. Flinders does not count postgraduate study at all.
Do all medical schools count my whole degree?
No. Most GEMSAS schools use only your most recent three years of full-time study. UQ is the exception: it averages every graded subject in your key degree.
Which medical schools put the least weight on GPA?
Wollongong and Sydney use GPA as a hurdle only. Flinders shortlists for interview on GAMSAT alone and counts GPA only after you pass the interview.
